The brand-new Women’s Rush League burst into life last night, delivering a high-energy showcase of local basketball talent and setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting competition.
Designed to keep the action intense and the stakes high, the Rush League follows a Rapid League format, featuring shortened quarters that demand urgency from the opening tip off. With no playoffs, every possession matters and the team that finishes top of the standings will be crowned the inaugural champion.
Adding to the intrigue is the league’s unique draft system, where players registered individually before being selected into one of the six teams. The result? Competitive matchups, no clear favourites and guaranteed spots for younger players to gain experience.

Round One
Rush City 45-47 Seagulls (OT)
Round one tipped off with a thrilling contest that needed overtime to decide the winner. In a matchup between the Otago Nuggets coaching staff, it was Matheson Colquhoun leading his Seagulls to victory over Mike Spencer’s Rush City.
The game also featured a standout scoring duel between Southern Hoiho teammates Alexa Duff and Tia Pavihi. Duff top scored with 27 points, but it was Pavihi’s 23 points that proved decisive - leading her side to the win.
Spartans 34-42 Mercury
Another tightly contested matchup highlighted the intensity and competitiveness of the league, with another Southern Hoiho player, Elise Gilbert, leading Mercury to victory with an impressive 18 points. She was well matched by Otago U20 representative Freya Roberts, who delivered a strong 15 point performance in a spirited effort despite the loss.
Wahs 50-32 Miners
A dominant performance from Coach Darren Paewai’s Wahs proved too strong for a depleted Miners side led by Southern Hoiho Head Coach Todd Marshall. Zoe Richards showed exactly why she was the No.1 overall pick, leading the charge with an outstanding 20 point effort. She was well supported by Lucy Mavor (11 points) and Aimee Lynch (10 points), rounding out an impressive offensive display.
Round Two
Mercury 45-35 Wahs
Mercury capped off a perfect evening, finishing 2-0 behind an impressive showing from Otago U20 representative and Junior Tall Fern, Kiana Brown, who led the way with 17 points.
After their dominant opening-round performance, the Wahs were unable to back it up in their second outing, despite a strong 15 point effort from Zoe Richards.
Seagulls 20-58 Spartans
The overtime win in round one appeared to take its toll on the Seagulls, who struggled to maintain their intensity in their second outing of the night. The Spartans capitalised with Abby Harris (18 points) and Maddie Kerr (17 points) showing no mercy in a commanding performance.
Otago U16 representative Lulu Mahoney also made a valuable contribution with 8 points, highlighting the strong development opportunities the competition is providing for emerging talent.
Miners 26-36 Rush City
Rush City bounced back from their overtime loss thanks to another solid offensive performance by Alexa Duff (11 points). The Miners will undoubtedly bounce back after a tough opening week of games.
Leading Scorers:

2nd - Zoe Richards (Wahs) - 17.5 ppg
