This past weekend our Under 14 Girls representative teams showcased their skills at the pre-regional tournament in Gore, a crucial step in their journey towards the BBNZ U14 Regional Championships in Ashburton.
Representative teams from Otago, North Otago, Southland, Eastern Southland and South Canterbury came together for a weekend filled with competitive spirit and camaraderie. Basketball Otago was well represented with three teams, each fostering a vibrant team atmosphere and cheering each other on throughout the action-packed weekend.
In the A grade, the U14 Girls A team claimed 2nd place. They delivered convincing victories against Southland and two South Canterbury teams but faced an experienced Eastern Southland squad in the final. The hosts started strongly which ultimately proved to be the difference in the final outcome.
After a tough start, the U14 Girls B team finished the weekend on a high, claiming 5th place after triumphing over South Canterbury in their crossover matchup.
In the B grade, the U14 Girls Development team also finished 5th place with each game of the tournament being a nailbiter. After losing the opening two games by a combined total of 6 points, they bounced back beating hosts Eastern Southland and carried that momentum forward to secure victory against South Canterbury and secure 5th place.
Basketball Otago wishes to express our gratitude to all players, coaches, managers and parents who contributed to such an enjoyable experience. The focus now shifts to the BBNZ U14 Regional Championships in Ashburton scheduled for 9-12th October. Final team selections will be announced soon.
