Thank you to those Associations who responded to the survey regarding the timing of the U19 National Championships. The results from the survey was a 2:1 ratio to change to Queens Birthday weekend (Saturday 3rd to Tuesday 6th June) and with several associations advising they don’t mind either way. Another factor we took into consideration is that BBNZ is exploring a concept (at this stage) to piggyback off Basketball Australia’s 2017 NCAA HP scouts camp and the proposed dates are scheduled for the second week of the July School Holidays. Further details will be provided once known.

Therefore the U19 National Championships will be played over the Queen’s Birthday weekend for the next two years (2017 and 2018) on a trial basis. BBNZ will monitor association team entries, athlete attendance and feedback over these two years to help gauge whether this tournament will remain at the new dates or return to July.

U15 & U17 National 3X3 Championships

This tournament was scheduled for the April school holidays (14-30). Unfortunately this tournament won’t take place in 2017 due to several Easter tournaments being held over the Easter Holiday (14-17), the World Masters Games event (21-30) as well as the under 14 Talent Development Camps. BBNZ will look to re-establish the 3x3 events in 2018.

Intermediate Schools 3X3 Championships

BBNZ has decided to discontinue with this tournament at this stage, and urges Associations to take on this initiative and develop it in your area if you have not already done so or create a zone championship. We suggest you look at late November or early December as an opportunity to provide a fun day away from school for students interested in basketball.

National Basketball Championships

After three years of trying to reignite an adult championship, BBNZ has decided to put this tournament on hold as we have not seen the uptake as initially hoped; back to the drawing board! We have some ideas on how we can try and address this differently and will get back to you as soon as they take shape.

Tertiary National Championships

A new university and tertiary sports organisation ‘University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand’ (UTSNZ), has been established by New Zealand’s university Vice Chancellors. The primary purpose of UTSNZ is to build and support inter tertiary sport in the tertiary sector. In the initial stages, the core objective of UTSNZ is around reviving competitive inter tertiary sporting competitions, lifting the standard of these competitions and developing pathways to international opportunities. BBNZ is currently working with UTSNZ to confirm a date for this new event which will feature in the BBNZ Tournaments Calendar.

Due Dates and Venues

The 2017 Tournaments Calendar due dates and tournament venues will be available in due course.
